width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\"><\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Overgeneralization is defined as taking isolated cases and using them to make wide generalizations<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>We often see circumstances in our life as fitting a narrative, we place limits on what we cannot do. \u00a0 We see the narrative of comparing ourselves to others whenever we compete.\u00a0 In the long run,\u00a0this is unhealthy if we generalize\u00a0these events to\u00a0our self-esteem.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I want to talk about what a police officer\u00a0who discusses\u00a0when you join the SWAT team you&#8217;ve got\u00a0to\u00a0put your ego aside.\u00a0\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>He talked about a young officer who comes in and turns out to be a better shooter even though he had less experience.\u00a0\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The trick is to localize your competitiveness to specific tasks and goals rather than generalizing it to self-worth.\u00a0 Don\u2019t treat everything as an evaluation of yourself.\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>You can feel good about your accomplishments but just recognize that your accomplishments do not define you.\u00a0\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Going back to police officer example.\u00a0 Why that&#8217;s important because like egotistical you have guys in the bravado, the cool image, even they&#8217;re saying put aside your ego.\u00a0 That&#8217;s really the point: if you want to think of it every situation as a form of competition and you want or need to resolve the situation one way or another so in a way it&#8217;s doing your best in the moment.\u00a0\u00a0 If you put your ego aside, you can actually better focus on the task in the present moment.<\/p>\n<p>Your pushing yourself aside, your pushing yourself hard, to do your best, but not thinking of it as an egotistical competition.\u00a0 Rather it&#8217;s a localized challenge for ourselves rather than general competition that goes to the heart of many people\u2019s self-esteem.\u00a0 The ego can sometimes be death for our performance.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s\u00a0really important\u00a0to recognize that if you want\u00a0a\u00a0better situation,\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not saying don&#8217;t be competitive at all, but I am saying be locally competitive and be more performance-based.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In the podcast we discuss\u00a0some strategies.
