B6 has the most direct anxiety connection of the B vitamin family. A 2022 randomised controlled trial from the University of Reading found that high-dose vitamin B6 supplementation produced a statistically significant reduction in anxiety symptoms, linked to improved GABA functioning. GABA is the neurotransmitter most directly associated with calming and relaxing the nervous system — the same pathway targeted by benzodiazepine medications.

B1 is said to help reduce anxiety and have an overall calming effect on the nerves. It is involved in energy metabolism and the proper functioning of the nervous system.

Niacinamide — the amide form of niacin — can have a calming effect and works on some of the same brain neurotransmitters as anti-anxiety medications. Vitamin D has emerged as one of the most significant nutritional factors in anxiety research since the earlier version of this article was written. A 2024 study of US adults published in Frontiers in Nutrition found a significant negative correlation between serum vitamin D levels and anxiety — meaning higher vitamin D was associated with lower anxiety risk. Individuals in the highest vitamin D quartile had meaningfully lower odds of anxiety than those with lower levels.
Vitamin D deficiency is extremely common, particularly in northern latitudes during winter months, among people who work indoors, and in older adults. Symptoms of deficiency can include low mood, fatigue, and increased anxiety — often without the person realising the nutritional root cause.
Food sources: oily fish, egg yolks, fortified dairy and plant milks — but sun exposure and supplementation are often necessary to maintain adequate levels, particularly in winter.
