Often anxiety and ADHD sufferers often easily recall upsetting events from the past and they start to relive the experience. This is related to something called rumination. We have talked about this rumination before; however, we recently decided to share some additional ideas with you that could help with this struggle.
Okay, so let’s get started.
Whenever you recall something from the past that bothers you, start by asking yourself the following questions:
1. Is it possible to view the event as something more minor, in the grand scheme of things?
2. Are you on some level thinking you were the cause of the original event, even though this might not be the case?
3. Do you think that if you reflect on the incident long enough doing so will prevent the same thing from happening in future?
4. Is it necessary to keep reliving the experience?
Now, consider the fact that each time you have a strong physiological reaction to a negative stressor you are putting unnecessary stress on yourself. In another video we talked about the physical symptoms of anxiety and how powerful they can be.
Events in the past are no longer real. They are over and done with. Instead, think of the power of the present moment and consider the fact that you CAN simply change the subject of your thinking. At first this will require a conscious effort, but over time this effort can become a new habit. If you consider these steps as a daily ritual you will be surprised how many times you can change the channel of your thoughts in a beneficial manner.
