INSTALLMENT #6: Putting it all Together

To quickly recap the newsletter series thus far:

I began by outlining some aspects of my own journey and recovery so that you could see proof that there is hope for your recovery.

Four broad lessons from this installment were:

1) The importance of knowing that any chance of recovery is blocked without a strong, BELIEF that YOU can recover.

2. The importance of using enlightening experiences, success stories and triumphs of others who have conquered anxiety and panic to keep you going when you encounter rough times.

3. The importance of being proactive and that starting the change within yourself is critical in your transition from being a helpless victim to recoverer.

4. The importance of your willing commitment to learn, and apply the techniques you’ve been learning.

In the next installment, I discussed the physiological and emotional aspect of a panic attack (your “fight or flight” response) and how you can induce the relaxation response in your daily life.

I also showed you how your thoughts “distort” reality – and practically cause 99% of your anxiety and panic attacks… then I showed you how to take back control using the power of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy,

I followed up with a specific example of how to use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy by working through “John’s” distortions.

The example demonstrated how beneficial it can be to locate cognitive distortions and substitute healthier, more realistic thoughts to feel better and eliminate anxiety on the spot.

In the next installment, I discussed how an overall holistic approach is critical for recovery from anxiety, panic attacks, and overall well being. This wasn’t just anecdotal but is backed by some very good scientific evidence and studies.

As you can see, the approach I stress is a combination of looking at the physiological process of anxiety and panic attacks, and overall wellness, but at the same time the thought processes.

There are many approaches that can work short term but again I believe this type of holistic approach is the critical approach to long term recovery.

You’ve been keeping up with me so far, and I want to acknowledge you for reading, learning and growing your ability to recover from panic attacks.

The key, is to CONTINUE to consistently apply this holistic approach daily, weekly and monthly.  I hope you will do so.
