In preparing for this video, we completed a search of research through PubMed.
It is our opinion that after reviewing a variety of studies one could take the view that taking a good multi-vitamin and mineral supplement – which includes both Vitamin C and a Vitamin B Complex, given they’re essential for proper nervous system and adrenal function among other things – may be a good idea. Like anything related to health, you should always consult a qualified healthcare provider before starting something new.
However, is there any specific evidence suggesting the effect of nutrition on mental health?
It turns out there has been some additional and interesting research in this area.
One source we’d like to mention is Dr. Julia J. Rucklidge, a Professor of Clinical Psychology in the Department of Psychology at the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand.
She states that her interests in nutrition and mental illness grew out of her own research showing poor outcomes for children with significant psychiatric illness despite receiving conventional treatments for their conditions.
She gave a talk at a TEDx event, which you can easily find online. Dr. Rucklidge discussed a range of scientific research, including her own, on the role played by nutrition in mental health or illness.
What’s interesting about what she had to say?
The many research studies she discussed did show the benefit of broad spectrum nutritional supplements in treating ADHD, psychosis, Bipolar Disorder, anxiety and more recently, stress and PTSD associated with the Canterbury earthquakes.
There was also research demonstrating that just eating a healthy diet, meaning a diet that consists of foods in their natural form, fresh produce, fish, and nuts (very different from a traditional Western diet) can be helpful for mental health as well.
